Gaseous total

Electronic spectra are almost always treated within the framework of the Bom-Oppenlieimer approxunation [8] which states that the total wavefiinction of a molecule can be expressed as a product of electronic, vibrational, and rotational wavefiinctions (plus, of course, the translation of the centre of mass which can always be treated separately from the internal coordinates). The physical reason for the separation is that the nuclei are much heavier than the electrons and move much more slowly, so the electron cloud nonnally follows the instantaneous position of the nuclei quite well. The integral of equation (BE 1.1) is over all internal coordinates, both electronic and nuclear. Integration over the rotational wavefiinctions gives rotational selection rules which detemiine the fine structure and band shapes of electronic transitions in gaseous molecules. Rotational selection rules will be discussed below. For molecules in condensed phases the rotational motion is suppressed and replaced by oscillatory and diflfiisional motions. [Pg.1127]

Units and Concentration. In the gaseous as well as the condensed phases, molecular concentration by molecular species is of prime importance. By convention, total pressure in a MaxweUian gas is used as though it indicates the quaUty of the vacuum and as though MaxweUian gases were the rule rather than the exception (12). In general, in dynamic systems, gas pressure (or its partial pressure components) is neither isotropic nor an adequate indicator of molecular significance. [Pg.366]

Interaction between Gaseous and Condensed Phases. In a closed vessel of volume Ucontaining a nonionized, unexcited molecular gas having total number of molecules A/, the change in the pressure P in the gas can often be predicted if the steady-state absolute temperature Tis changed to another steady, constant level ... [Pg.366]

Partial Concentration. The sum of the partial concentrations (pressures) in a free molecular gas is equal to the total concentration (pressure). However, all gaseous components, at the same partial pressure or absolute pressure or ratios thereof, are not likely to have the same significance to any or all vacuum appHcations. The significance of the condensed-phase concentrations must therefore be considered. [Pg.367]

Successful operation of the gaseous diffusion process requires a special, fine-pored diffusion barrier, mechanically rehable and chemically resistant to corrosive attack by the process gas. For an effective separating barrier, the diameter of the pores must approach the range of the mean free path of the gas molecules, and in order to keep the total barrier area required as small as possible, the number of pores per unit area must be large. Seals are needed on the compressors to prevent both the escape of process gas and the inflow of harm fill impurities. Some of the problems of cascade operation are discussed in Reference 16. [Pg.85]

The optimum pressure level for gaseous diffusion operation is also determined by comparison at some pressure level the decrease ia equipment size and volume to be expected from increasing the pressure and density is outweighed by the losses that occur ia the barrier efficiency. Nevertheless, because it is weU known that the cost of power constitutes a large part of the total cost of operation of gaseous diffusion plants, it can perhaps be assumed that a practical value of r does not differ gready from the above optimum. Inclusion of this value ia the preceding equations yields... [Pg.87]

The microwave spectrum of isothiazole shows that the molecule is planar, and enables rotational constants and NQR hyperfine coupling constants to be determined (67MI41700>. The total dipole moment was estimated to be 2.4 0.2D, which agrees with dielectric measurements. Asymmetry parameters and NQR coupling constants show small differences between the solid and gaseous states (79ZN(A)220>, and the principal dipole moment axis approximately bisects the S—N and C(4)—C(5) bonds. [Pg.136]

EPA Method 25A is the instrumental analyzer method for determination of total gaseous organic concentration using a flame ionization analyzer. The method apphes to the measurement of total gaseous organic concentration of vapors consisting primarily of alkanes, alkenes, and/or arenes (aromatic hydrocarbons). The concentration is expressed in terms of propane (or other appropriate organic calibration gas) or in terms or carrion. [Pg.2204]
