The crude product of reaction of methanol and carbon monoxide at 100°C/70 bar in presence of 0.5% of sodium methoxide was discharged after cooling into a storage bottle, which burst 4 h later. This was attributed to extreme instability of the ester in presence of the base, leading to the reverse reaction with vigorous evolution of carbon monoxide.
