Several techniques have been developed for the investigation of the rate of nucleation. Earlier methods were based on galvanostatic techniques. The first to use this technique were Samartzev and Evstropiev. Later it was developed and refined in experiments of Schottky and Gutzow but, because of the high sensitivity of the nucleation process on overpotential, the results are difficult to interpret. Potentiostatic techniques gave more comprehensible results. The technique allows an estimate to be made of the time lag n needed for the formation of the first nucleus.
