Gallium isopropoxides

Reactions of gallium isopropoxide with monofunctional bidentate Schiff bases, o-HOC6H4CMe—NR and 2-HOG0H6CH=NR (R = Et, Pr , or Ph), yield complexes Ga(OPr)2SB, Ga(OPri)(SB)2, and Ga(SB)3525 The Ga is thought to be respectively four-, five-, and six-co-ordinate in the three classes of complex. 

Attempts to elucidate the structure of gallium isopropoxide have also been made by Oliver and Worrall" as well as by Mehrotra and Mehrotra. These workers observed that the NMR spectrum of a freshly prepared benzene solution of gallium isopropoxide shows three doublets due to methyl protons in the approximate intensity ratio expected for a tetrameric structure. A study of the NMR spectrum of an aged sample of gallium isopropoxide shows evidence for dissociation of the tetrameric form into the dimeric form, possibly due to the higher tendency of gallium to attain the stable four-coordination state as compared to the six-coordination state which is less stable.

Indium(III) alkoxides are readily prepared by the treatment of trihalide with NaOR.127 The chemistry of these compounds has been little studied, no doubt because they are insoluble materials in which the indium atom optimizes its coordination number by cross-linking via oxygen. The isopropoxides of aluminum and gallium react128 with In(OPr )3 to give In[M(OPr )4]3 (M = A1, Ga) which are volatile and monomeric in solution. The structure involves six-coordination at the smaller metal centre. 

Stepwise reactions of isopropoxides of other tervalent metals (lanthanides, " gallium, and antimony ) have also been carried out by similar procedures and a number of isopropoxide-j6-diketonates as well as tris-j6-diketonates have been characterized by physico-chemical techniques.
