Gaelic League

His conviction was that the only real remedy for emigration was the restoration of some national life to the people (341). He believed that the Gaelic League was doing more than any other movement to check the demoralisation, but noticed with dismay in The Aran Islands that a young woman who had returned from exile seemed disoriented and listless, at once sophisticated and disillusioned ... 

We have it here. Irish is to remain a peasant language in case it becomes tainted with the modern world, with the filthy ink of journalese. In this he was as conservative and as anti-modernist as the most backward looking of the Gaelic League. But it is what he did with the language which he found before him that was profoundly radical.
