Gadolinium thermal properties

Studies on the thermal properties of lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and gadolinium hexaborides in the cryogenic region from 5° to 350°K. 193) have shown the presence of two types of anomalies in the latter three substances. Of all the properties of the rare earths that contribute to their many and varied applications one that ranks of special interest is the extremely high thermal neutron capture cross-section associated with the elements gadolinium, samarium, europium and dysprosium, see Table IV. 

Compared with the high symmetry of site, the asymmetrical fields have a drastic influence on the spectroscopic properties of Bi ". The lowest excitation level shifts toward higher energy, whereas the Stokes shift increases. The Se site has better resistance to thermal impact than the C2 site at higher temperature [57]. A similar conclusion was reported in Bi -doped yttrium or gadolinium niobates [58].
