Gabapentin Valproate

Outside of the evidence-based guidelines, other pharmacologic treatments are commonly used or avoided. For initial treatment of absence seizures, ethosuximide and valproate are commonly used, not only in the United Kingdom, but also in the United States. Zonisamide may be also used for initial treatment of absence and myoclonic seizures. In absence and myoclonic seizures, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, gabapentin, tiagabine, and pregabalin should be avoided, as they have been associated with an exacerbation of these types of seizures. [Pg.450]

Anticonvulsants. Several antiseizure medicines have been studied in the treatment of PTSD, and some results have been encouraging. Open label studies, first with carbamazepine (800-1200 mg/day) and later with valproate (500-2000 mg/ day), demonstrated overall improvement in PTSD patients, though not for intrusive recollections per se. Recent open label studies of gabapentin, lamotrigine, tiagabine, and topiramate have suggested these anticonvulsants might also be helpful for some PTSD symptoms. [Pg.174]

A compound commonly used for treating epilepsy but also has applications in treating pain (e.g. phenytoin, carbamezapine, gabapentin and sodium valproate). [Pg.579]

For simple and complex partial seizures and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, the first line drugs are - carbamazepine, valproate and phenytoin. Second line drugs include - acetazolamide, clobazam, clonazepam, ethosuximide, felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxacarbamazepine, primidone, tiagabine, topiramate and vigabactin. [Pg.303]

Atypical antipsychotics and anticonvulsants such as valproate may be safer and more effective than gabapentin during the postpartum period when treating a nursing mother with bipolar disorder... [Pg.204]

Clearance of tiagabine may be reduced and thus plasma levels increased if taken with a non-enzyme inducing antiepileptic drug (e.g., valproate, gabapentin, lamotrigine), so tiagabine dose may need to be reduced... [Pg.459]

Gabapentin is the most commonly used antiepilepsy drug in this setting phenytoin (which raises the threshold of nerve cells to electrical stimulation) or sodium valproate are used for resistant neuralgias. [Pg.325]

Individual drugs carbamazepine, phenytoin, sodium valproate, lamotrigine, vigabatrin, gabapentin, clonazepam, topiramate, levetiracetam. [Pg.413]

Bromide (1857) was the first drug to be used for the treatment of epilepsy, but it is now obsolete. Phenobarbital, introduced in 1912, controlled patients resistant to bromides. The next success was the discovery in 1938 of phenytoin (a hydantoin) which is structurally related to the barbiturates. Since then many other drugs have been discovered, but phenytoin still remains a drug of choice in the treatment of major epilepsy. Over the past ten years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of new anticonvulsant drugs (vigabatrin, gabapentin, lamotrigine, topiramate, oxcarbazepine, levetiracetam), but none has been shown to be superior to the major standard anticonvulsants (phenytoin, carbamazepine and sodium valproate). [Pg.413]

Alopecia is not uncommon with valproate, and it can also occasionally occur with phenjdoin, carbamazepine, vigabatrin, and gabapentin. [Pg.283]

A 25-year-old man taking gabapentin 900 mg/day reported anorgasmia during sexual intercourse (37). He was given valproate instead and his sjmptom resolved within 12 days. [Pg.1468]
