GABAergic intemeurons

Non-NMDA and NMDA receptors are used by many spinal neuronal cell types (reviewed by Zieglgansberger and Tolle, 1993 Lodge and Bond, 1994 Woolf and Costigan, 1999). Ionotropic glutamate receptors are also expressed by nociceptive primary afferent neurons, i.e.

The 5-HT4-R KO mice were recently generated and characterized (156). These mice have decreased viability (a decreased percentage of homozygous null animals were bom from a heterozygote cross than expected), which might be the result of a lower seizure threshold in these mice. 5-HT4-Rs are present on GABAergic intemeurons and increase the firing of these cells (157,158),...

Intrinsic or Local Connections There are extensive translaminar cormections from superficial to deeper layers and vice versa. Layer II pyramidal cell axon collaterals synapse with deeper layer III pyramidal cells and with local inhibitory intemeurons in layers I and II. Local collaterals from deeper pyramidal cells synapse with local intemeurons or with more superficial pyramidal cells. Local projections from pyramidal cells to GABAergic intemeurons play an important role in regulating PC neuronal excitability, including the expression of LTP and seizures, via feedback and feedforward inhibition (Ekstrand et al., 2001a).

The no or little GluR-B rule for GABAergic intemeurons is not absolute. GluR-A/GluR-B double-positive cells in layers II-VI are mainly bipolar or multipolar and have intense calbindin-D28K immunoreactivity (Kondo et al., 1997). Some of these cells may be the bipolar... 

This suggests that hippocampal GABAergic intemeurons have highly Ca " -permeable channels with fast kinetics.
