Fuzzy Hierarchical Classification Techniques in Analytical Chemistry

FUZZY HIERARCHICAL CLASSIFICATION TECHNIQUES IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY [Pg.347]

In the extensive literature on the applications of classification methods to analytical chemistry many techniques have been described and several reviews have been published. A detailed discussion of all these techniques is not our intention here. Useful information may be found in the books of Jurs and Insenhour, Malinowski and Howery, Varmuza, Kateman and Pijpers, Massart and Kaufman, Jolliffe, Coomans and Broeckaert, Sharaf et al., Massart et Willett, and Zupan. Some early reviews and interesting applications are to be found in Kowalski, Kryger, and Frank and Kowalski. For other useful methods and applications, also see Allen et al., Auf der Heyde, Derde and Massart, Forina and Armanino, Holm and Sande, Karpen et al. Kowalski and Wold, Murray-Rust and Raftery, Okada and Wipke, Perkins and Barlow, Perkins and Dean, Pijpers, Shenkin et a/., Shenkin and McDonald, and Swanson. The books of Duda and Hart and Jain and Dubes are also recommended. [Pg.347]

The advent of fuzzy set concepts and models gave a new flavor to classification techniques in analytical chemistry. Blaffert and Otto and [Pg.347]

Bandemer considered the role of fuzzy set theory in analytical chemistry. The applications they described focused on pattern recognition problems, the calibration of analytical methods, quality control, and component identification and mixture evaluation. Gordon and Somorjai applied a fuzzy clustering technique to the detection of similarities among protein substructures. A molecular dynamics trajectory of a protein fragment was analyzed. In the following subsections, some applications based on the hierarchical fuzzy clustering techniques presented in this chapter are reviewed. [Pg.348]
