Fungi athletes

Dermatophyte is the term applied to a range of fungi capable of colonizing the skin, nails or hair. The principal dermatophytic fungi are Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton species. The most commonly encountered dermatophytic infections are athlete s foot (infection of the foot) and ringworm (fungal infection of the scalp or skin). 

Tolnaftate is an antifungal agent that distorts hyphae and inhibits mycelial growth in susceptible fungi. It is indicated in the treatment and prophylaxis of tinea pedia (athlete s foot) treatment of tinea cruris (jock itch) or tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by specific fungi treatment of oncho-mycosis, chronic scalp infections, palm and sole infections with kerion formation and treatment of tinea versicolor. 

Carboxylate salts are used as additives for inhibiting or stopping the growth of bacteria and fungi, e.g., in foods, athlete s feet and diaper rash powders, and cervical creams. 

Moulds are a particular group of very small fungi which, under damp conditions, will grow on things such as walls, bread, cheese, leather and canvas. They can be beneficial (penicillin) or cause allergic reactions (asthma). Asthma attacks, athlete s foot and farmer s lung are all examples of fungal infections.
