Functionalization of the third octahydroacridine unit

Caution Carry out all procedures in a well-ventilated hood, and wear disposable vinyl or latex gloves and chemical-resistant safety goggles. 

Assemble the round-bottomed flask with stirrer bar, magnetic stirrer, heating mantle, thermometer and adaptor, reflux condenser, and nitrogen inlet adaptor. Flush the apparatus with nitrogen. 

Replace the stopper and stir the reaction mixture at 150°C under nitrogen for 24 h. 

Allow the reaction flask to cool to room temperature, seal it with the stoppers, then store it at 0°C for several hours. 

Collect the product by vacuum filtration. Wash it first with ice-cold ether and then with 65 mL of ice-cold 1 1 (v/v) ethanol/methanol.
