To investigate the influence of swelhng of the substrate by the contacting liquid, the contact angle 6 of sessile drops of tricresylphosphate, TCP (drop volume 2 p,L, viscosity t = 70 cP, surface tension = 40.9 mN m ), has been measured as a function of time after deposition, t, on flat, smooth, horizontal surfaces of soft and rigid solids at 20°C. The method of measurement of contact angle is the same as in Section Ill.A. [Pg.298]

The first-zero method starts from the ideal lattice and Eq. (8.67). For the purpose of evaluation of scattering curves from polydisperse soft matter the ideal long period, L, is replaced by Lapp, i.e. the validity of j (v (1 -v )Lapp)= Ois assumed. Because of the fact that the zero of a function is determined, not even a normalization of yt (x) is required [162], Figure 8.22 displays the model data of Fig. 8.21 after the method-inherent renormalization x —> x/Lapp. Comparison with Fig. 8.21 shows that now... [Pg.162]

Motivation and Principle. Broadened reflections are characteristic for soft matter. The reason for such broadening is predominantly both the short range of order among the particles in the structural entities, and imperfect orientation of the entities themselves. A powerful method for the separation of these two contributions is Ruland s streak method [30-34], Short range of order makes that the reflection is considerably extended in the radial direction of reciprocal space - often it develops the shape of a streak. This makes it practically possible to measure reflection breadths separately on several11 nested shells in reciprocal space. As a function of shell diameter one of the contributions is constant, whereas the other is changing12. If the measurement is performed on spheres (azimuthal), the orientation component is constant. [Pg.216]

The HF results generated for representative polyatomic molecules have used the /V-derivatives estimated by finite differences, while the -derivatives have been calculated analytically, by standard methods of quantum chemistry. We have examined the effects of the electronic and nuclear relaxations on specific charge sensitivities used in the theory of chemical reactivity, e.g., the hardness, softness, and Fukui function descriptors. New concepts of the GFFs and related softnesses, which include the effects of molecular electronic and/or nuclear relaxations, have also been introduced. [Pg.475]

The phosphine-functionalized tpy ligand 4 -Ph2Ptpy has both hard and soft donor sites the ligand is prone to oxidation to 4 -Ph2P(0)tpy and this affects the method of preparation of [Ru(4 -Ph2Ptpy)2]. " The complex [RuL(4,4 -Me2bpy)(NCS)] where L = 4-phosphonato-2,2 6, 2"-terpyridine, shows two ground-state pKi values at 6.0 and <4.0. The emission spectrum of the complex and the excited-state lifetimes are pFI-dependent. ... [Pg.640]

The frame for the instrument always has vibrations transmitted from the ground and the air. The displacement of the frame is described by a function of time, X t). The STM is represented by a mass M, mounted on the frame. The problem of vibration isolation is to devise a proper mounting to minimize the vibration transferred to the mass, that is, to minimize its displacement of the mass M, x(t). The basic method for vibration isolation is to mount the mass to the frame through a soft spring, as shown in Fig. 10.1. The restoring force of the spring acting on the mass is... [Pg.237]
