The pathologic disease processes that cause DHF include myocardial ischemia with or without epicardial CAD, pressure overload hypertrophy, and genetic hypertrophy. Hypertrophy consequent to the physiologic adaptation to pregnancy, hypertrophy that occurs in athletes, and volume-overload hypertrophy do not cause abnormalities in diastolic function and do not result in the development of DHF. [Pg.358]

Unsaturations of lipids play a key role in lipid homeostasis, where organisms adapt to temperature variations of the environment. Plants and animals maintain physiological functions by reversibly altering the composition and conformation of lipid molecules of the cell membrane. To achieve this, they extensively and elegantly use the unsaturations (double bonds) present in their side chains. In the normal healthy IVD, the cells not only produce matrix macromolecules and growth factors, they also produce a myriad of proteases [26, 27]. Included in this list of proteases are the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and aggrecanolytic members of the disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif family (ADAMTS) as well as their respective inhibitors.
