Fuming and smoking

As the result of a mix-up at a distribution center, two tank track drivers received each other s papers. One of the trucks carried a load of sodium chlorite solution, and the other carried epichlorohydrin. The chlorite truck went to the customer who was expecting epichlorohydrin and was off-loaded into a tank that already contained some epichlorohydrin. The result was an explosion and a serious fire fumes and smoke led to the closure of the bridges over the Severn Estuary. UK [12, 13]. 

Patients who smoke should be strongly encouraged to quit cigarette smoking decreases the efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids and can trigger an acute asthmatic response.3 All patients should also avoid secondhand smoke. Parents of children with asthma should be instructed not to smoke in the home and not to allow others to smoke in the home. Patients should also avoid outdoor activities when air quality is poor and avoid exposure to other irritants such as hairspray, paint, exhaust fumes, and smoke from any fire. 

What is clean air Unpolluted air is a concept of what the air would be if humans and their works were not on earth, and if the air were not polluted by natural point sources such as volcanoes and forest fires. The true composition of unpolluted air is unknown because humans have been polluting the air for thousands of years. In addition there are many natural pollutants such as terpenes from plants, smoke from forest fires, and fumes and smoke from volcanoes. Table 4.1 lists the components that, in the absence of such pollution, are thought to constitute clean air. 

There are several other forms of matter having characteristics similar to gases, such as vapour, mist, dust, fume, and smoke. These materials are classified in Table 1.3. 

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by ingestion and skin contact. Combustible liquid. Can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use CO2, water spray or mist, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid and irritating fumes and smoke. See also ESTERS.

Observe normal precautions appropriate to the circumstances and quantity of material handled. Eye protection and gloves are recommended. When heated to decomposition, propyl gallate may emit toxic fumes and smoke.

No-one should underestimate the danger of fire. Many materials burn rapidly and the fumes and smoke produced, particularly from synthetic material, including plastics, may be deadly.

When n-butylhthium (as a hexane solution) is transferred via syringe, it sometimes fumes and smokes hut rarely catches fire unless one is very careless. When tert-butyllithium (as a pentane solution) is transferred, there is almost always a fire on the tip of the syringe (potentially very dangerous).
