Fullerene bisphenol

Wooley et al.1511 have described the creation of fullerene-bound dendrimers (Scheme 5.14). Reaction of C60 with bis(p-methoxyphenyl)diazomethane 54 and subsequent cleavage of the methyl ethers afforded a 6-6 methano-bridged fullerene (55) possessing two phenolic moieties, as the major product.1521 Treatment of the bisphenolic fullerene 55 with 2.7 equivalents of the activated dendron (52) afforded the desired substituted fullerene (56) possessing two dendritic arms. 

When the determination of the composition is not required, the assignment of mass spectral peaks can be directly carried out to establish what kind of oligomers is present. In a straightforward application, Vitalini et al. recorded the negative ion MALDI-TOF mass spectrum of a copolymer containing units of bisphenol (referred to as A) and units of a derivatized fullerene (referred to as B). The mass spectrum (see Figure 10.28) covers a wide mass range (1600-14000 Da). The peaks are due to cyclic ions of the type A B where n extends from 1 to 15. 

Polymers 11 and 12 were synthesized by a condensation reaction between an isomeric mixture of 61,6T-bis(p-hydroxyphenylmethano)[60]fullerene (8) and bisphenol A (9) or l,20-bis(bisphenoxy-A)-eicosane (10) in the presence of NaOH. These macromolecules were soluble in organic solvents, with good thermal stability and presented a relatively high My, (11 151200 12 18170). 

Fullerene-C-60 was immobilized on glassy carbon by evaporation of a CH2CI2 solution. The adsorbed fullerene was cycled in 1 M NaOH for its reduction and the electrode was utilized for bisphenol quantification in wastewater. The detection limit was determined as 3.7 x 10 mol L . The association of fullerenes and MWCNT was explored for the quantification of the endocrine disruptor vinclozolin in wastewater. A glassy carbon electrode was polished and a solution containing both carbon forms (MWCNT C-60 = 2 1) were cast on the electrode that was dried at air.
