Fucus gardneri the presence of enzymes capable of synthesizing mannuronan from Fru 6-P has been demonstrated. Mannuronan 5-epimerase activity has been detected in extracts from brown seaweeds. A nucleoside diphospho sugar, identified as GDP-L-GulA, was also found, but there was no evidence that it was incorporated into polymer.
