Biosynthetically, majority of terpenoids are formed via the mevalonic acid, but they may also be formed through methyl-erythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway. The C5 isoprene unit which can be linked together head to tail to form linear chains or cyclized to form rings is considered the building blocks of terpenes. Rather the C5 units exist as isopentenyl pyrophosphate or its isomer dimethylallyl pyrophosphate by enzymatic conversion and phosphorylation from mevalonic acid. Terpenes (and terpenoids) are further classified according to the number of 5-carbon units they contain. Thus, monoterpenes are 10-carbon substances biosynthesized from two isoprene units, sesquiterpenes are 15-carbon molecules from three isoprene units, diterpenes are 20-carbon substances from four isoprene units, and so on. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are found primarily in plants, but the higher terpenoids occur in both plants and animals, and many have important biological roles. Abundant terpenes constitute the logical precursors to pol54erpenic materials destined for bulk applications. In this context, pinenes, readily isolated on an industrial scale from turpentine, are obvious candidates. Although less abundant than a-pinene, P-pinene is by far the most studied homologue because of the higher reactivity of its exo-cyclic double bond in cationic pol5merization.
