Freshwaters element chemistry

Columns, with a length of 0.302 m and an inside diameter of 0.025 m, were packed with sediment collected from an uncontaminated part of the aquifer adjacent to the tracer-test plume. Ground water of two different compositions was used in the experiments. One composition, from above the sewage plume, had a pH of 5.7 and no measurable phosphate (PO4). The other composition, from the transition zone between the freshwater and the sewage plume, had a pH of 6.3 and had 0.036 mmol/1 PO4. Major element chemistry for both ground waters is listed in Table I.
