Frederick T. Wall

Fred Wall was born in Minnesota and educated there as well, receiving his Ph.D. in 1937. As part of his Ph.D. research, he spent a year with Linus Pauling at the Cahfomia Institute of Technology. He was appointed to the University of Illinois in 1937 and stayed until 1963, finishing as Dean of the Graduate College. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1959. [Pg.55]

The University of Illinois was a scientifically productive place for polymer science. Carl Marvel exposed Wall to the many interesting problems that needed theoretical treatment. He is especially known for his work on the theory of mbber [Pg.55]

When Fred Wall was the Vice President for Research at Illinois, he was heavily involved in the creation of the legendary BLLIAC computer. He used it himself to calculate the statistical properties of chain molecules. He used the Monte Carlo method to assess the average conformations of the macromolecules. [Pg.56]
