This is not simply a theoretical condition. Formoterol was originally discovered by Yamanouchi, who licensed it to CIBA-Geigy, a forerunner company of Novartis which markets it under the brand name Foradil. The drug has been off-patent for many years and AstraZeneca has its own formulation developed without reference to Foradil and marketed as Oxis. It is not even known whether these formulations are equivalent in a mean sense. Yet patients can be switched from one to the other by their physicians in those markets in which both were licensed. Now suppose a generic manufacturer shows that a new formulation is equally prescribable as Foradil. (Since these formulations are inhaled this would actually be quite difficult.) It would be absurd to object to a licence because switchability was not proved (Senn, 1998, 2001). [Pg.372]

Storage instructions that are important for the usage period should be on the label (e.g. Keep refrigerated, or Store at room temperature). Sometimes only the pharmacy stock needs to be kept in the refrigerator, while this is not necessary for the short period the patient uses the medicine. Examples are Acetic acid Ear drops and Atimos or Foradil aerosol. Both ear drops and preparations for inhalation should be at least at room temperature when used, because low temperatures can be unpleasant for the patient. [Pg.815]
