Food production world hunger

Buttel (11) fears that past experience leads us to expect increased socioeconomic differentiation, increased reliance on capital-intensive production, much greater off-farm than on-farm benefits to small farmers. The bright side may lie in an expanded supply response which may allow food production to keep pace with the exponential growth in population although the immediate problems of world hunger Involve distributional problems rather than inadequate supply. [Pg.263]

Global population growth is about 1.3% every year, and the population is expected to reach seven billion by 2015 and nine billion by 2050 [1], In the time it takes to read this sentence, another 20 people will have been added to the world s population [2], The number of malnourished people in the world has been estimated at 852 million. Each year, hunger and malnutrition are responsible for the deaths of six million children. In want of food, people plow forests and the world annually loses 9.4 million hectares of forests [3]. A hectare (ha) is 10,000 square meters and 9.4 million ha is about 36,000 square miles or about the size of the entire state of Indiana. Exacerbating the food problem is the use of crops as fuel. For example, in the United States, com is used to make ethanol for gasoline. In Brazil, sugar cane is used. There are other efforts to use crops such as soybean for biodiesel. It has been estimated that food production will have to increase 70% by 2050 to feed the growing population [4]. [Pg.203]

The world s population exceeds 6 billion and is estimated to reach about 9 billion by the year 2050 (5). Today, more than 800 million people are suffering from undernourishment (4), Reduction of hunger through an increase of food production is one important challenge for sustainable development. [Pg.4]

In the developing countries of the world where population growth is resulting in hunger and malnutrition, food production is the first requisite. Nutrition education has little effect where people have neither the food nor the money with which to buy food to quiet their hunger pangs. [Pg.778]

The use of pesticides is crucial to the increase of agricultural production in the world, and thus to human survival. This productivity increase was essential for livestock, such as cattle, pigs, poultry and fish, maintaining the food production chain. The rise in food production was necessary to support the population growth and reduce hunger, especially in poor countries. [Pg.86]
