Fontane, Theodor

Theodor Fontane s Effi. Briest (1895) is the highly refined product of a writer who came late to the novel, and whose achievement in a German context was to steer a course between, on the one hand, the heavy-handed attempts of Freytag, Gutzkow, or Spielhagen to emulate the teeming abundance of social life found in a Dickens or a Balzac, and on the other hand, the intensely inward German novel of subjectivity. [Pg.31]
