A study was made of relationships between compound rheological properties, microwave vulcanisation parameters and accelerators on the quality of extruded EPDM foam seals for the automotive industry. The influence of these factors on cell size and structure, density and mechanical properties was investigated. Correlations were found between the chemical composition of the compound, variations in processing parameters and the quality of the finished product. 12 refs.

The evolution of fiunes from the acid inserted into the graphite layer planes can introduce processing problems, imless an acid neutraliser is present. Apphcations of graphite include insulation foam, foamed sealing tape for windows and doors, roof membranes and coatings. The products are black and must not be heated above 200 C.

After the mould had been loaded with reinforcement, the foam seal was put in place and the mould, which had been set at a temperature of 150 C, was closed. 

Experiments 1-4 clearly show that a high glass content can be achieved whilst a relatively low void content ( 1 %v) is maintained. This is only possible with the use of the foam seal, since comparable experiments without such a seal, or experiments in which the seal ruptured, resulted in composites with void contents ranging from 5 to as high as 12 %v. 

Syringes are placed in a rack or some other means of support and loaded into the reaction gas container (see Notes 2 and 3). The reaction gas container is sealed using polypropylene foam seals.
