Fly strike

The Soil Association prohibits the use of organo-phosphate dips against fly strike and scab, mainly because of the undoubted health risk to shepherds. However, there are dips that can be used which are effective and which do not contain organo-phosphates. Flumethrin-based compounds can be used against sheep scab. [Pg.58]

Figure 5. Molecular denaturation. The loss of the cushioning effect of water, analogous to a fly striking a windshield, induces structural changes in the three dimensional arrangement of the molecular elements. This is also known as the brick wall effect. Figure 5. Molecular denaturation. Tho best way to try the quality of cast-iron is to Strike its edge with a hammer. Should the blow make a slight impression, the iron must be in some degree malleable, and, if tho specimen be uniform, it may be regarded as good for machinery if, on thg contrary, tho hammer make no impression, and fragments fly off, the iron is brittle, and, consequently, bad. The soft cast-iron yields readily to the file after the outer crust has been romoved, and is, in a cold state, slightly malleable. [Pg.431]

The central idea in the laser-based method for detection of small quantities of H in restricted areas is that an intense laser strike can form a pothole in a metal. The metal of the pothole and the H it contains are vaporized. Both the H and some of the metallic atoms are withdrawn by a vacuum that pulls gaseous constituents out of the system. On the way, however, these constituents are made to fly through the space between the electrodes of a quadrupole mass spectrometer set to measure mass 2. Knowing the H2 produced from one laser strike, and the dimensions of the pothole, the H concentration in the metal—and within any restricted area to which the laser can be directed—can be measured. [Pg.257]

Several monoolefins were reported to function as short-range sex attractants for male face flies, Musca autumnal is (46). In order of decreasing activity, (Z)-14-nonacosene, (Z)-13-nonacosene, and (Z)-13-heptacosene were demonstrated to increase the incidence of male strikes at females. These cuticular constituents were present in both sexes, as were nonacosane and heptacosane, two alkanes reported to attenuate the activity of the monoolefins. [Pg.210]

A large series of cuticular hydrocarbons extracted from the female stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is reported to function as a sex pheromone (47). (Z)-9-Hentriacontene, (Q-9-tritriacontene, and methyl-branched hentria- and tritriacontenes possessed activity as sexual releasers. In addition, mono- and dimethyl-substituted hentria- and tritriacontanes were also demonstrated to induce mating-strike behavior in male flies. However, these compounds may actually function as psychedelics, as does (Z)-9-tricosene for the housefly (45). [Pg.211]

Proteins with the same catalytic property do not always have closely similar structures. Alcohol dehydrogenases (EC 1.1.1.1) from yeast [2] and fruit-flies [3,4], for example, have strikingly different primary structures. [Pg.113]
