Fluorous carboxylic acid protecting group

TBDPS was not extracted with FC-72, the deprotected tetrasaccharide 35 was easily extracted with FC-72. Each synthetic intermediate was easily purified by simple FC-72 and organic solvent extraction and monitored as a single compound by NMR, mass spectroscopy and TLC, in contrast to the solid-phase synthesis. 

This strategy was successfully applied fo a practical synthesis of a trisaccharide part of globotriaosyl ceramide. A highly fluorinated carboxyUc acid (Hfb) was also prepared and used for rapid and large-scale synthesis of a thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).  

The first wave of research into fluorous compounds focused exclusively on using fluorous solvents as separation media. The first publication on the use of fluorous silica gel in 1997 marked a dividing point,as the field began to diverge into what are now often called its heavy and fluorous branches.
