Flight leak

Most small Hquid helium containers are unpressurized heat leak slowly bods away the Hquid, and the vapor is vented to the atmosphere. To prevent plugging of the vent lines with solidified air, check valves of some sort are included in the vent system. Containers used for air transportation are equipped with automatic venting valves that maintain a constant absolute pressure with the helium container in order to prevent Hquid flash losses at the lower pressures of flight altitudes and to prevent the inhalation of air as the pressure increases during the aircraft s descent. Improved super insulation has removed the need for Hquid nitrogen shielding from almost all small containers. [Pg.12]

Some nitric acid had to be flown from the U.S. to the UK. Several U.S. regulations were broken the acid was packed in glass bottles instead of metal ones and was surrounded by sawdust instead of nonflammable material, and the boxes containing the bottles were not labeled as hazardous or marked This Side Up. The boxes were therefore loaded into the cargo aircraft on their sides, and the bottles leaked. Smoke entered the flight deck, and the crew decided to land, but while doing so the plane crashed, probably as the result of poor visibility on the flight deck, and the crew was killed. It is not clear why a common material of commerce had to be flown across the Atlantic [5]. [Pg.104]

Recently, Kohout and Lampe264 decomposed H2 or D2 by mercury sensitization in the presence of NO. The experiments were done in a cell with a pinhole leak to a Bendix time-of-flight mass spectrometer. They directly observed mass spectral peaks at m/e = 31 or 32, which correspond to HNO or DNO, respectively. [Pg.272]

The experiments of Kistiakowsky and Kydd [1] were done by single-pulse photolysis with a 500-J flashlamp, the reaction vessel contents being sampled via a pinhole leak into the electron ionization source of a Bendix time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. Mass spectra were obtained by pulsed extraction of ions from the ion source at 50-fis intervals after the flash. The signal from the electron multiplier detector was displayed on a cathode ray tube, which was photographed with a rotating drum camera. [Pg.3]

The question is, how can we be more like birds Mankind has always envied birds their power of flight, but now it seems we should envy them their mitochondria too. Bird mitochondria hardly leak any free radicals. Why The simple answer is that we don t know, though there are some clues that might point us in the right direction. But before we speculate on these clues, are there people with bird-like mitochondria, and do they live for longer Again, the place to look is the centenarians. [Pg.334]

Also, the naturally odorless hydrogen gas in the Hindenburg was odorized with garlic so that any leaks could be detected, but nobody reported any smell of garlic during the flight or at the landing prior to the disaster. [Pg.18]

There was unease, but no actual problems. Not for the first few hours. Then some idiot from the spaceport s civil traffic control centre leaked the news (actually he was paid two hundred thousand fuseodollars by Collins for the data) that the Yaku had docked at Valisk. Twenty starships immediately filed for departure flights, which Rubra refused. [Pg.176]

The Paul trap is housed in a central climate chamber which can be cooled down to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. The pressure and composition of the background gas in this chamber can be controlled by a gas mixing and inlet system and is usually adapted to stratospheric conditions. This chamber is suspended inside an insulation chamber which is kept at high vacuum. This chamber is equipped with a quadrupole mass spectrometer to analyze the chemical composition of the atmosphere, which leaks from the central chamber through a small pinhole. This system of vacuum chambers is connected to a standard time-of-flight mass spectrometer by means of a droplet translator. This is a cold finger which can be used to... [Pg.244]

In the screw, the cross-section of the screw channel is open, enabling the material exchange to take place from one flight to the other. Normal leak flow (mechanical clearance) between screw crests and barrel is required for material flow. In a fully inter-mesbing screw, the screws are open lengthwise. [Pg.45]
