Summarizing the results described so far, whether twins are formed on (100) or (111) faces of diamond crystals, depends on the value of the a-parameter under CVD conditions used. For practical applications, it is often necessary to make diamond films with flat surfaces, and thus one must determine CVD conditions [Pg.61]


In a famous paper by Shechtman et al. (1984) electron diffraction patterns were shown of rapidly quenched and solidified aluminium-manganese alloys. Sharp diffraction peaks, suggesting long-range translational order, were observed with the presence however of five-fold symmetry (that is of a non-crystallographic symmetry see 3.6.1.1). By different orientation of the specimen five-fold axes (in 6 directions), three-fold axes (in 10 directions) and two-fold axes (in 15 directions) were identified with the subsequent observation of the existence also of an inver-sion centre the assignment of this phase to the icosahedral point group, m36, was defined. [Pg.198]

Recently "quasicrystals having the shape of a triacontahedron have been discovered in specially prepared alloys of aluminum and other metals. A triacontahedron e a regular polyhedron with 30 identical, diamond-shaped feces (Fig. 3.35). Whether anomalous structures are formed in small metal clusters is dependent on many factors. For example, the particle size is important, as is the method of preparation. Different metals behave differently and structures can be affected by support interaction. Renou and Gillet75 have found for metal particles produced by gas evaporation into flowing argon that Au particles in the range 4-25 nm tend to have five-fold symmetry, whereas Pd or Pt show only a small proportion of anomalous structures.
