Filtration correlation

A PVDF membrane filter has been shown to remove >10 particles of vims for vimses >50 nm independent of fluid type (8). Vimses smaller than 50 nm are not removed as efficientiy but are removed in a predictable manner which correlates to the vims particle size. The chemistry of the suspending fluid affects titer reduction for vimses <50 nm owing to other removal mechanisms, such as adsorption, coming into play. The effects of these other mechanisms can be minimized by using filtration conditions that minimize adsorption. [Pg.144]

While research has developed a significant and detailed filtration theory, it is still so difficult to define a given liquid-solid system that it is both faster and more accurate to determine filter requirements by performing small-scale tests. Filtration theoiy does, however, show how the test data can best be correlated, and extrapolated when necessary, for use in scale-up calculations. [Pg.1692]

Where the resistance of the precoat bed is significant in comparison to the resistance of the deposited solids, the thickness of the precoat bed effec tively controls the filtration rate. In some instances, the resistance of the deposited solids is veiy large with respec t to even a thick precoat bed. The correlations used are based partly on theoretical consideration and partly on empirical observations. API Filtration. A filter press is used to determine the wall building characteristics of mud. The press consists of a cylindrical mud chamber made of materials resistant to strongly alkaline solutions. A filler paper is placed on the bottom of the chamber just above a suitable support. The filtration area is 7.1 ( 0.1) in.-. Below the support is a drain tube for discharging the filtrate into a graduate cylinder. Results from constant differential pressure filtration tests have been analyzed according to traditional filtration science techniques with some modifications to account for the cross-flow filter arrangement.11 Resistivity of the filter medium may vary over time due to the infiltration of the ultrafine catalyst particles within the media matrix.
