Fill handle

There are three types of data that can be entered in the cells of the spreadsheet number, date/time, and text. For multiple entries of serial number with constant increment, enter the initial value into the first cell, highlight the cells, and select Edit -> Fill -> Series. To fill multiple entries of the same value into a range, enter the value into the first cell, move the pointer to the right-hand corner of the active cell to activate fill handle (a bold crosshair), and drag it through the range. Data are edited with the usual cut, copy, and paste operations in the Edit menu and the decimal places of scientific numbers is controlled via dialog box in Format -> Cells. 

Excel Tip. To Fill Down a value or formula to the same row as an adjacent column of values, select the source cell and double-click on the fill handle. 

Again click on cell B9, click on the fill handle, and drag through columns C and D to copy the formula to cells C9 and D9. The mass of silver chloride should now be calculated for all three crucibles.

The fiU handle permits you to copy the contents of a cell to other cells either horizontally or vertically, but not both. Just click on the fill handle and drag from the current cell to the last cell where you want the original cell copied. 

Once you have typed the formula, click on cell B11 and drag on the fill handle to copy the formula into cells C11 and Dll. The % chloride for samples 2 and 3 should now appear in the spreadsheet, as in Figure 3-7. 

In constructing this spreadsheet, we have learned some of the basics of spreadsheet operation, including typing text into a spreadsheet, changing column widths with the mouse, duplicating cells with the fill handle, and entering formulas into a spreadsheet. 

Now the atomic mass of hydrogen appears as 1.00794 in the cell. All that remains is to click on the fill handle of cell F2 and drag to the bottom of the table to extract the atomic masses from the strings. Your worksheet should now appear as shown in Figure 3-12. Scan column F, and you will see that some atomic masses are still not displayed correctly. The atomic mass of lithium appears as [6.941, and others (elements 43, 61, 84-89, and 93-114) appear with the notation VALUE , which indicates an error because there are no parentheses in these strings. For now, you can... 

The error condition N/A then appears in cell 12 because G2 is blank and thus contains no element symbol. Click on cell G2, and type Fe. The atomic mass of iron now appears in cell 12. Try typing several other element symbols in cell G2, and note the results. When you are satisfied that the LOOKUP function is working properly, click on cell 12, and copy the contents into cell 13, using the fill handle. Then type various element symbols in cell G3, and your worksheet should look something like the one shown in Figure 3-14. 

Copy the formula from J2 to J3 using the fill handle, and enter the following equation in cell J4.
