Fibrinolytic medicine

An ideal fibrinolytic medicine should have the following properties [62] (1) Strong fibrinolytic activity (2) Specificity on fibrinogen and fibrin (3) Low immunogenicity (4) Long half-life in vivo, (5) Low re-occlusion rate and (6) Reasonable cost.

Ultrasound-assisted soft digestion has been used for other practical purposes from which analytical chemists can derive new applications. One case in point is in medicine, where ultrasound has been used as an adjunctive therapeutic treatment for clot dissolution of pharmacological thrombolysis. The combination of externally applied low-frequency high-intensity US with fibrinolytic therapy resulted in more rapid and complete reperfusion than the application of US or administration of fibrinolytic agents alone [42]. 

The earthworm, commonly used for medicine, is L. rubellus. Mihara isolated and obtained three fractions (F-I, F-II and F-III) of fibrinolytic enzymes, from the homogenized extract [1,3,4]. Six isozymes were identified according to their further purification [24]. F-I and F-III could be subdivided into three (F-I-0, -1-1, and -1-2) and two (F-III-1 and -III-2) components, respectively, except F-II. The molecular mass of each isozyme (monomer) has been measured by several methods (Table 1.). The isoelecctric point (pi) analysis displays weak acids of these isozymes.
