Fet3p enzymatically converts ferrous iron to ferric, which then must be mobilized across the membrane by a second protein. This protein was identified by Stearman et al. and was termed Ftrlp for Ferric Transmembrane Permease [62]. Ftrlp-deficient yeast show no high affinity iron transport activity and FTRl mRNA, like
