There have been 13 small scale experiments since 1993 aimed at fertilizing the oceans with iron salts (Fig. 1.9). The latest one, which drew the most media attention, was conducted by the research ship Polarstern from the Wegener Institute (Fig. 1.10). Forty-nine researchers, mainly from India and Germany cooperated in this experiment, called LOHAFEX, with the name constracted from the Hindi word loha (iron) and the English expression fertilization experiment . Polarstern set sail on January 26,2009 arrd aimed to distribute 201 of ferrous sulfate (equivalent to 61 of dissolved iron) in an area of 300 km arormd Antarctic waters. There were heated protests against the plarmed experimerrt, rrrainly from the activists of Greenpeace.
