Fern Palms

The groups still extant are the Cycads or Fern Palms, the Gne-tums, the Ephedras, the Ginkgos and the Conifers. Of these the Conifers comprising over 300 species are the most numerous. Many of them yield valuable products to pharmacy and the arts. [Pg.293]

The two plants that seem to be the best bet for ridding one s home of such chemicals are ferns and palms. These plants release moisture as part of photosynthesis and, as they do, pull chemicals from the air into their leaves. Even NASA has conducted some greenhouse experiments for long-term space exploration. Within hours, their plants [palms] had removed almost all traces of formaldehyde in the room. Both species of plants are ancient, dating back more than a hundred million years. Another trait they share is that they both live long lives, 100 years or more. This we expect from trees, but ferns and palms are plants plants that can grow to 65 feet in the proper setting Even their individual leaves live for one to two years [ferns] and one to nine years [palms]. Perhaps it is their primal qualities that have contributed to their ability to purify their environment. [Pg.125]

Numerous garden varieties, such as herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, and potatoes, may be reproduced in abundance using the "Sea Of Green" process. There are thousands of different houseplants - ferns, coleus, palms, and spider plants - that are likewise easily reproduced using this process. For the homeopathic gardener, an endless supply of medicinal plants may be produced. [Pg.1]

B Ride the Coska Rican Jungle Train along the steamy Caribbean shoreline. Pass over rivers and along curtains of coconut palms, and visit a working banana plantation. B Rafting the Markka Brae River on a 30-foot raft is the way to go. Groves of bamboo and layers of ferns line the riverbank outside of Ocho Rios, Jamaica. [Pg.81]

Cycads are seed plants characterized by a large crown of compound leaves and a trunk. They are evergreen and have large pinnately (feather-Uke or multi-divided features arising from both sides of a common axis in plant) compound leaves. They are frequently confused with and mistaken for palms or ferns, but are only distantly related to both. [Pg.14]

Accrustation materials of the C.w. of boundary tissues (epidermis, periderm) are cutin and suberin. Cu-tin forms a cuticle of varying thickness and strength. Suberin is the material of cork, e. g. in the cork oak, Quercus suber. Some plant C. w. secrete wax, e. g. the Andean wax palm, Copemica cerifera. TTie walls of pollen grains and cryptogam (e. g. fern) spores consist of Sporopollenin (see). [Pg.107]
