Fenton’s chemistry

From the 323 MTBE projects in U.S. EPA s MTBE Treatment Profiles dataset, 21 projects were identified where MTBE was treated using ISCO. No ISCO projects reported treating other oxygenates. Four of the projects used ozone and 17 used hydrogen peroxide, either alone or with Fenton s chemistry.

The above recombination reactions require the presence of either hydrogen radicals (H ) or both H+ and e. As the experiments were carried out in acidic conditions (pH = 3.5), electron transfer was possible because Fenton s chemistry does not generate hydrogen radicals (Huang et al., 1993).

This paper discusses the use of Fenton s chemistry for catalyst preparation. This technology, based on the generation of OH radicals from H2O2 in presence of Fe-cations, has been applied for the treatment of wastewater to remove organic pollutants. In this study, it is shown that the Fenton s reaction is very effective for detemplation and functionalization of micro- and mesoporous materials. Three examples will be discussed.
