Fatigue testing failure, plastic specimen

Flex life n. Informally, the number of bending-reversal cycles causing a part to fail in a particular service. Most specifically, the number of cycles to failure of a test specimen repeatedly bent in a prescribed manner. The ASTM test for plastics is D 671. The specimen, molded or cut from sheet, is subjected to load reversal at 30 Hz at a predetermined level of outer-fiber stress until it either fails or the test is discontinued. By setting up different stresses for successive specimens, one can develop a graph of stress at failure versus number of cycles to failure (usually plotted on semi-logarithmic coordinates), i.e., the flex-life curve of fatigue curve. [Pg.417]

The rotating beam fatigue test is generally not used to test plastics materials due to hysteresis phenomena. When used, the test is conducted at a very low testing speed to avoid premature failure due to heat buildup. The test is conducted by mounting both ends of the dumbbell specimen in the testing machine. The specimen is rotated between two spindles, and stress in the form of tension and compression is applied. The specimen is subjected to the number of cycles of stress specified or until fracture occurs. [Pg.85]

The well-known S-N curves are - probably for historical reasons — the method most often used to describe fatigue behavior for fiber reinforced plastics. In this discontinuous (as defined in the previous section) procedure, the fatigue criterion is typically fracture, that is total failure of the test specimen. Statistic evaluation leads to statements regarding the probability of fracture P, Figure 1.65. [Pg.129]
