Fatigue resins

Corrosion attack on the polymer is influenced by permeation rate, as weU as internal stresses or fatigue, that distorts or fractures the resin glass fiber... [Pg.321]

Wear. Eor a fixed amount of braking the amount of wear of automotive friction materials tends to remain fairly constant or increase slightly with respect to brake temperature, but once the brake rotor temperature reaches >200° C, the wear of resin-bonded materials increases exponentially with increasing temperature (26—29). This exponential wear is because of thermal degradation of organic components and other chemical changes. At low temperatures the practically constant wear rate is primarily controlled by abrasion, adhesion, and fatigue (30,31). [Pg.273]

Although in many respects acetal resins are similar to the nylons, they may be considered to be superior to them in their fatigue endurance, creep resistanee, stiffness and water resistance. The nylons (except under dry conditions) are superior in impact toughness and abrasion resistance. [Pg.539]

The data presented in Figure 19.7 were obtained on a Sonntag-Universal machine which flexes a beam in tension and compression. Whereas the acetal resin was subjected to stresses at 1800 cycles per minute at 75°F and at 100% RH, the nylons were cycled at only 1200 cycles per minute and had a moisture content of 2.5%. The polyethylene sample was also flexed at 1200 cycles per minute. Whilst the moisture content has not been found to be a significant factor it has been observed that the geometry of the test piece and, in particular, the presence of notches has a profound effect on the fatigue endurance limit. [Pg.540]

Acetal resins find a number of applications in gears, where they come into competition with the nylons. Acetal gears are superior to those made from nylon in fatigue resistance, dimensional stability and stiffness, whereas nylon gears in conditions of average humidity have greater resistance to impact fatigue and abrasion. [Pg.545]

The degradation of the matrix in a moist environment strongly dominates the material response properties under temperature, humidity, and stress fatigue tests. The intrinsic moisture sensitivity of the epoxy matrices arises directly from the resin chemical structure, such as the presence of hydrophilic polar and hydrogen grouping, as well as from microscopic defects of the network structure, such as heterogeneous crosslinking densities. [Pg.206]

Resin curing of SBR and BR imparts excellent cut growth and abrasion resistance. Resin-cured NBR shows high fatigue life and high relaxation, while resin-cured HR shows outstanding ozone and age resistance [55]. [Pg.440]
