For his Ph.D. at Harvard, Conant studied a physical chemistry problem under T. W. Richards (1868-1928) and an organic problem under E. R Kohler (1865-1938).222 He obtained his doctorate in 1916, and after war work joined the Harvard faculty in 1919. For the next 14 years he was an effective member of the chemistry department, but in 1933 he was chosen to be President of Harvard, and his chemistry career ended. In those 14 years, he had carried out much research of a physical organic nature. There is plenty of material on Conant. Towards the end of his life he wrote an autobiography.223 His role in the development of physical organic chemistry has been assessed by Saltzman.224,225 There are biographical memoirs from both the National Academy of Sciences226 and the Royal Society of London.227... [Pg.108]
