A filtered soln. of 2-pyridylmethyllithium prepared from 2 moles of bromobenzene, 4 moles of Li, and 2 moles of 2-picoline in ether stirred under dry Ng and treated dropwise with 1 mole of 5-bromopentan-2-one ethylene ketal at a rate sufficient to maintain gentle refluxing, which is continued for 10 min. without external heating, refluxed with heating for a further 4 hrs., and left overnight 6- (2-pyridyl) hexan-2-one ethylene ketal. Phenylselenomethyltrimethylsilane in dry tetrahydrofuran added at -78° under argon to a stirred soln. of Li-diisopropylamide in the same solvent, after 45 min. at -78° 1-bromopentane in tetrahydrofuran added dropwise, and after 3 hrs. kept 4 hrs. at 25° intermediate (Y 94%) dissolved in stirred tetrahydrofuran-ether, ca. 2 equivalents 30%-H2O2 added at 0°, after 10 min. allowed to warm to room temp., and the product isolated after 1 hr. at 25° 1-hexanal (Y 80%).
