Experimental set-up for spin-dependent measurements

The parameter A, related to Pz, is the only spin-polarization component which does not vanish if all electrons are spin-analysed regardless of their direction of [Pg.235]

Of the many possibilities for performing experiments with the set-up described, three special measurements can be selected to determine the spin-polarization dynamical parameters A, a and jj of a selected photoionization process [HSS86]  [Pg.236]

The contribution from S1 can be eliminated by subtraction, and the dynamical parameter A follows. [Pg.236]

The results of a spin-polarization measurement of xenon photoelectrons with 5p5 2P3/2 and 5p5 2P1/2 final ionic states are shown in Fig. 5.21 together with the results of theoretical predictions. Firstly, there is good agreement between the experimental data (points with error bars) and the theoretical results (solid and dashed curves, obtained in the relativistic and non-relativistic random-phase approximations, respectively). This implies that relativistic effects are small and electron-electron interactions are well accounted for. (In this context note that the fine-structure splitting in the final ionic states has also to be considered in [Pg.236]

The experimental data in Fig. 5.21, combined with measured values for the partial cross section t(2P3/2) and the angular distribution parameter j8(2P3/2), finally provide the complete information on 5p 1 2 3/2 photoionization in xenon required, and experimental values for the dipole matrix elements Dy can be evaluated [Hei80, HSS86]. The results are shown in Fig. 5.22 using the notation (note the different signs from the factor i (y in equ. (8.35)) [Pg.238]
