Experimental Evidence Regarding Amorphous Polymers

Questions of interest to amorphous state studies include the design of critical experiments concerning the shape of the polymer chain, the estimation of type and extent of order or disorder, and the development of models suitable for physical and mechanical applications. It must be emphasized that our knowledge of the amorphous state remains very incomplete, and that this and other areas of polymer science are the subjects of intensive research at this time. Pechhold and Grossmann (4) capture the spirit of the times exactly  [Pg.199]

Our current knowledge about the level of order in amorphous polymers should stimulate further development of competing molecular models, by making their suppositions more precise in order to provide a bridge between their microscopic structure description and the understanding of macroscopic properties, thereby predicting effects which might be proved experimentally. [Pg.199]

The subject of structure in amorphous polymers has been entensively reviewed (5-11) and has been the subject of two published symposia (12,13). [Pg.199]

The experimental methods used to characterize amorphous polymers may be divided into those that measure relatively short-range interactions (nonrandom versus random chain positions) (14), below about 20 A, and those that measure longer-range interactions. In the following paragraphs the role of these several techniques will be explored. The information obtainable from these methods is summarized in Table 5.1. [Pg.199]

One of the most powerful experimental methods of determining short-range order in polymers utilizes birefringence (6). Birefringence measures orientation in the axial direction. The birefringence of a sample is defined by [Pg.199]
