Expanded Stratigraphy

The Taylor Group of southern Victoria Land includes the basal New Mountain Sandstone which is a light-colored quartz sandstone containing pebbly sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and breccia/conglomerate layers near its base (Plume 1978 Wizevich 1997). The New Mountain Sandstone thins northward from 220 m at Mt. Handsley located a short distance south of Knobhead (Fig. 10.2) to 46 m near Mt. Boreas in the Olympus Range (Fig. 10.5) the top of this formation is truncated by the Heimdall erosion surface. [Pg.293]

Weller Sandstone Mt. Weller, western wall of Beacon Valley (Fig. 10.2) 152 + Quartz sandstone and conglomerate, carbonaceous semdstone, shtstone, and shale. The sandstone is massive, coarse grained, and cross-bedded. Fosshized plant debris, coed seams, and worm casts in shtstone [Pg.294]

Aztec SUtstone, Aztec Mountain upper Taylor Gl. (Fig. 10.2) 21 Red and green shtstone, found also at Maya Mtn., Mt Webber, Beacon Heights, and Knobhead. Desiccation polygons, small carbonate concretions, and abundant white worm tubes aligned verticaUy in red shtstone ( ScoUthus ) [Pg.294]

Beacon Heights Orthoquartzite, West Beacon Heights, upper Taylor Gl. (Fig. 10.2) 762-914 Homogeneous white to tan colored orthoquartzite. Massive festoon cross-bedded with worm casts, trails, ripple marks, and ferruginous concretions [Pg.294]

Basement rocks including the Asgard Formation and the Granite Harbor Intrusives (McKelvey and Webb 1962) [Pg.294]
