Expanded products from clays and shales

2 Expanded Products from Clays and Shales 5.3.6.2.1 Raw Materials [Pg.425]

Materials suitable for the manufacture of expanded clays or shales are those which form a gla.ss-like ( pyroplastic ) phase at high temperatures (ca. 1100 to 1200°C), whose viscosity is so high that gas produced in the product cannot escape and therefore bloats the material. The volume change of a clay granulate as a function of temperature is shown in Fig. 5.3-3. [Pg.425]

Expandable raw materials form a glass-like pyroplastic ) phase at I 100 to I200 C and are expanded by the gases formed at these temperatures [Pg.425]

Additives for increasing bloatability e.g. organic materials, iron oxide, gypsum [Pg.427]
