Two groups within NASA, one at Goddard Space Flight Center, under the direction of Bill Heaps, and the other at the Jet Propulsion Lab under Laudenslager and McDermid, have respectively developed balloon-borne LIDAR methods for OH and developed eximer laser systems for extending the LIDAR method to lower detection thresholds. This research has important implications for both stratospheric and tropospheric research. Such laser ranging techniques also have important implications for intercomparison studies, particularly with mm-wave and far infrared emission ex periments. [Pg.361]

Conventional CVD uses thermal activation, with the reaction taking place at elevated temperatures. The activation energy necessary for the reaction can also be supplied in the form of very hot electrons in a plasma (electrical gas discharge) or by absorption of infrared or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation. Eximer lasers are used for photolysis of gas molecules into reactive fragments that are the activated precursors for the CVD reaction at low substrate temperatures. [Pg.311]

The short wavelength A = 337 nm of the nitrogen laser permits pumping of dyes with fluorescence spectra from the near UV up to the near infrared. The high pump power available from this laser source allows us to achieve sufficient inversion even in dyes with lower quantum efficiency [5.163-167]. Nowadays the most important dye-laser pumps are the eximer laser [5.168,169], the frequency-doubled or -tripled output of high-power Nd YAG or Nd glass lasers [5.170,171] or copper-vapor lasers [5.172]. [Pg.318]
