Of all the properties of the rare earths that contribute to their many and varied applications one that ranks of special interest is the extremely high thermal neutron capture cross-section associated with the elements gadolinium, samarium, europium and dysprosium, see Table IV. [Pg.173]

Europium(III) exchanged zeolites have been studied by a number of research groups. Arakawa and coworkers (20, 21 ) report the luminescence properties of europium(III)-exchanged zeolite Y. Emission spectra were measured under a variety of conditions and bands for europium(II) were observed after thermal treatment of the europium(III) Y zeolites. A mechanism was proposed for the thermal splitting of water which involved the cycling of europium between the two different oxidation states. Europium MSssbauer experiments (22 ) also show that on thermal treatment of europium-(III) zeolites that europium(II) is formed. Stucky and coworkers (23, 24) studied the phosphorescence lifetime of these europium-(lll) zeolites and showed that the inverse of the lifetime (the decay constant) was linearly related to the number of water molecules surrounding the europium(III) ion in the zeolite supercages. These studies involved zeolites A, X, Y and ZSM-5. [Pg.226]

Similar to the europium complexes, the terbium complexes used as good emitters in OLEDs also need to have high photoluminescent efficiencies, good carrier transporting properties, and sufficiently good thermal stability for small molecule materials to form a film by thermal evaporation in vacuum. [Pg.455]

In Chapters I and 2, an introduction is made to the synchrotron Mossbauer spectroscopy with examples. Examples include the/ns/tu Mossbauer spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation on thin films and the study of deep-earth minerals. Investigations of in-beam Mossbauer spectroscopy using a Mn beam at the RIKEN RIBF is presented in Chapter 3. This chapter demonstrates innovative experimental setup for online Mossbauer spectroscopy using the thermal neutron capture reaction, Fe (n, y) Fe. The Mossbauer spectroscopy of radionuclides is described in Chapters 4-7. Chapter 4 gives full description of the latest analysis results of lanthanides Eu and Gd) Mossbauer structure and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) lattice parameter (oq) data of defect fluorite (DF) oxides with the new defect crystal chemistry (DCC) Oq model. Chapter 5 reviews the Np Mossbauer and magnetic study of neptunyl(+l) complexes, while Chapter 6 describes the Mossbauer spectroscopy of organic complexes of europium and dysprosium. Mossbauer spectroscopy is presented in Chapter 7. There are three chapters on spin-state switching/spin-crossover phenomena (Chapter 8-10). Examples in these chapters are mainly on iron compounds, such as iron(lll) porphyrins. The use of Mossbauer spectroscopy of physical properties of Sn(ll) is discussed in Chapter I I. [Pg.652]
