Eugenol 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol

Eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) Eugenol is not actually derived from a terpene molecule (as opposed to carvacrol and thymol) but it is a phenol and is found in essential oils of clove, cinnamon leaf, pimento, ylang ylang and rose. It has a spicy, pungent odour typical of clove.

Cloves, dry flower buds of the Eugenia caryophyllata (Myrtaceae) tree, native to Zanzibar and other South and Southeast Asia countries, contain 15-20% of the essential oil, the main part (80-90%) of which is eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol). Eugenol (see Section 8.2.3.1.2) has a characteristic smell of clove and a slightly pungent taste. 

Eugenol, 4 allyl-2-methoxy phenol, is capable of forming cements with ZnO, CuO, MgO, CaO, CdO, PbO and HgO (Brauer, White Moshonas, 1958 Nielsen, 1963). Other 2-methoxy phenols are also capable of forming cements with metal oxides, provided the allyl group is not in a 3- or 6-position where it sterically hinders the reaction (Brauer, Argentar Durany, 1964). These include guaiacol, 2-methoxyphenol, and the allyl and propylene 2-methoxy phenols.

In annular denuder sampling, potassium iodide (20 g KI in 10 ml of deionized water + 10 ml of 10% glycerol in methanol), phenoxazine (0.4 g in 20 ml of acetone), and 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol (eugenol, 10% in methanol) are used as absorbents. The third absorbent releases formaldehyde by ozonolysis, which is collected with another downstream denuder coated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (0.5% in acetonitrile containing 1% phosphoric acid).
