Thienylaminomethylenemalonates were ethylated with ethyl p-toluenesulfonate in the presence of potassium carbonate (85EUP161235) and potassium hydroxide (87MI3) in DMF to afford N-ethyl derivatives (711, R = H, Me) in 80% and 41-48% yields, respectively. 

The piperazino group of 3-piperazino-l//-pyrimido[l,2-a]quinolin-l-one (149, R = R1 = -CH2CH2NHCH2CH-) and 2-piperazino-4//-pyrimido-[2,l-a]isoquinolin-4-one was N-ethylated with ethyl p-toluenesulfonate in the presence of sodium carbonate in boiling ethanol (95MI1). 

Sodium nitrite reacts341 with methyl and ethyl p-toluenesulfonates to yield nitromethane and nitroethane, respectively. No study of its effect on other sulfonic esters has been encountered. 

N-o-Bromobenzyl-N,N-dimethylamine (lOOg) and ethyl p-toluenesulfonate (94 g) were mixed and warmed to 50°-60°C after standing for either (a) a minimum of 96 hours at 15°-20°C or (b) a minimum of 18 hours at 50°-60°C and cooling to room temperature, a hard, crystalline mass was formed. Recrystallization of this product from acetone (2.0 ml/g of crude solid), followed by filtration and drying to 60°C gave N-o-bromobenzyl-N-ethyl-N,N-dimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate as a white, crystalline solid, MP 97°-99°C. For this procedure it was necessary that the reactants were substantially colorless and of a high purity.
