Ethyl o-toluate

Bidentate base. The chiral lithium amide of (S)-l has been used to generate the anion of the ethyl o-toluate 2 and as a chiral complcxing agent in reaction of the anion with acetaldehyde to give optically active mellein methyl ether (3) in 53% optical yield. Optical yields are markedly lower when a chiral base similar to 1 but lacking the OCH, group is used. 

Kaur et al. presented the inhibition of class D p-lactamases by different acyl-phosphonates (01JACS10436). These compounds were synthetized starting with ethyl o-toluate 109. Benzylic bromination with N-bromosuccinimide followed by a subsequent Arbuzov reaction with triethyl phosphite and hydrolysis under acidic conditions afforded the phosphonic acid 110. The final dehydration of diacid 110 in refluxing xylene produced the cycHc phospho-nolactone 111 (Scheme 26). 

The present procedure is that described by the submitters.3 a-Phthalimido-o-toluic acid has also been prepared by the acidolysis of the corresponding ethyl ester, obtained from the reaction of ethyl a-bromo-o-toluate with potassium phthalimide.8... 

Also obtained by photo-Fries rearrangement of phenyl o-toluate in methanol or isopropanol (36-39%) and in benzene or ethyl ether (22%) [66].
