Ethyl 3-(2-chloro-6-mcthyl-5-nitro-3-pyridyl)-2-diazo-3-oxopropanoate (10.7 g. 34.2 mmol) in i-Pr20/CHCl3 (200 mL, 1 1) was cooled to 20 °C and treated with Ph,P (10.75 g, 41 mmol) in i-Pr20 (50 mL). The mixture was stirred at rt overnight, and the resulting precipitate was removed by filtration, washed with t-Pr20/ CHC13 (1 1). and dried in vacuo yield 4.9 g (52%) mp 264-266 °C.
