An interesting result, which may have some bearing on the effect of replacing native metals in enzymes with other metals, has been reported by Nakon et al.260 They found that the co-ordination sites of 3-[(ethoxycarbonyl ethyl)thio]-L-alanine (SCMC), and 3-[(2-aminoethyl)thio]-L-alanine in binding to bivalent zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel are dependent on both pH and metal. The copper complex of SCMC has the structure (10), while the zinc complex has structure (11). Similar effects are seen on changing pH. [Pg.467]

Such crystalline-state racemizations by photoirradiation were observed in the cobaloxime complexes not only with the chiral 1-cyanoethyl group but also with the chiral l-(methoxycarbonyl)ethyl [18-20], 1-(ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl [12,21], 1,2-bis(methoxycarbonyl)ethyl [22], l,2-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl [23], and l,2-bis(allyloxycarbonyl)ethyl [24] groups as axial alkyl groups. The concept of a reaction cavity was also applicable to the racemization of the cobaloxime complexes with such bulky chiral alkyl groups. [Pg.535]

The crystal structure of the R isomer before irradiation is very similar to that of the S isomer (Fig. 25) except that the chiral 1-(ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl group has the R configuration. The molecular structure is shown in Fig. 28a. The conformation of the / -l-(ethoxycamyl)ethyl group is shown in Fig. 28b, which is the... [Pg.557]

When the crystal was irradiated with a halogen lamp, the cell dimensions were gradually changed. They converge to the values observed in the photoirradiated crystal with the S isomer. The structure analyzed by x-rays after 24 h exposure revealed that it is essentially the same as that of the photoirradiated crystal with the S isomer. The molecular structure became the disordered one with the R- and S 1 -(ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl groups, which is the same as that shown in Fig. 27a. The R S ratio converged to 82 18, which is also the same as that observed in the photoirradiated crystal with the S isomer. [Pg.559]
