An ethnopharmacological survey was conducted in order to chemically investigate a Psychotria species, P. colorata, for analgesic activity. The plant is used by the caboclos, local rural communities in the state of Para, northern Brazil, to alleviate pain. The molecules discovered in this plant were the first of a fruitful endeavor phytochemical prospection of Psychotria species. 

Ethnopharmacological interest in Myristicaceae species first evidenced by Schultes in 1954 (3), inspired Gottlieb and co-workers to develop phytochemical investigations on these arboreal plants dispersed over Amazonia.
